CSM is fascinated by all the variables that go into whether a student accomplishes optimally or not. The idea that students start at kindergarten or 6^th or 9^th grade on an even playing field is, we know, not true. Some students have advantages that others simply do not. School is not a fair place. We can, briefly, say that outside circumstances are outside our control: the family’s income; the family’s educational background; the social context of the child’s life, the child’s height, sex, race; whether the child is the 1^st or 2^nd or 3^rd or 4^th child; the date of birth; there is research in all these areas and more. It is not an equal playing field.
