Introduction

CSM began a conversation based on a school’s request to know whether we had “professional development around the topic of helping faculty and administration have conversations with students on difficult subject matters.  In our current climate, we have two primary challenging subject matters that we want to equip our faculty to speak with students on.  One is racial equality & justice and the other is human sexuality.” Many of you gave us feedback and said that this was important. Daniel Simon introduced me to a way to do ChristianConversation that seems to be an excellent answer to this question. We’d like to introduce it to you.

We Need to Know!

Should CSM offer this? We need your feedback and you are the folks who can give it to us. Should CSM go forward with this? Is this an excellent (not just good or ok) path to offer our Christian schools? Can this meet a variety of cultural settings and contexts? Are we comfortable putting CSM’s name behind it? What do you think?

Our Invitation!

In July, we are offering you an almost free training so that you can experience its power and give us honest, painful if necessary, feedback. If you like it, of course, you have gone through Step Two at no cost. There is no obligation beyond telling us exactly what you think.

The cost is $75.00 – $50.00 is for materials, and $25.00 is to cover administrative costs. Neither CSM nor Daniel will make a penny from this. We are doing this to really find out, in a very challenging area, whether we have something to offer our community and benefit our children (and our adults!).

In the accompanying email, there is a link just for this group. Go there and sign up. Please. Help your own school and help us help our community of schools. Read on to get a full picture of what we are offering.

Find Hope; Live in Unity; Make a Difference

Do you want to learn how to have a conversation about race but are afraid of saying the wrong thing? Do you want to cultivate unity in your Christian school community but are afraid you’ll bring more division? The Third Option Similarity Training offers language on how to approach the conversation while honoring everyone involved. Today, we are in us vs them a culture that dishonors everyone. The Third Option is about honoring what we have in common. It brings the love of God to play in a way that is real, courageous, and insightful.

Relational rather than Political Focus

  1. Now you are the body of Christ and each one of you is a part of it – 1 Corinthians 12: 27 (the Third Option Focuses on Similarities not differences)
  2. And the one who trusts in Him will never be put to shame – 1 Peter 2: 6 (the Third Option Focuses on Honor and not shame).
  3. Until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ – Ephesians 4: 13 (the Third Option replaces ‘I win’/’you lose’ with ‘Win Win’).
  4. I in them and you in me-so that they may be brought to complete unity – John 17:23 (the Third Option replaces I’m wrong and you’re right with We Unite.)
  5. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone – Colossians 4:6 (the Third Option replaces ‘winning arguments’ with ‘Winning Relationships’.)

Outcomes

Get equipped with language around racism and honor and learn to focus on the similarities we all share to value our common humanity.

Learn what grouping is and how to consciously convert everyone you know into your “in-group” in order to destroy the walls that divide us.

Identify what racial “blind spots” are how to take personal accountability in overcoming them.

A critical look at the powerful labels we use everyday and how using certain labels can dramatically change how we honor others.

Be empowered with tools and language to actively confront racially offensive behavior that you encounter.

Learn how to develop cross-cultural competency by converting race conversations into race consultation by allowing others to disclose who they are

Four Steps to Engage in This Training With Your School

Facing issues at your own school with race and other subjects too? How can you lead the whole community and not just a few people? If you think this could be valuable for your school, here are the four steps and the costs that come with them:

Step One:

Engage Daniel to provide a 6 hour leadership training that will equip your school leaders and give them confidence going into this process. All the materials are included in the total cost: $1500 a school or $350 a leader whichever is less (minimum of 3).

Step Two:

Then take it to the teachers who will implement this process into the classroom. Our joy is to empower you so that you can take it from here. At the end of this you will know and have the skills to move forward with great hope: $2500 a school or $150 a teacher whichever is less (minimum of $1500). Again, all materials are included.

Step Three:

You are ready to implement. The only thing to do here is to obtain your K-2, 3-5, middle school, high school curriculum. Cost: $5.00 a student; $10.00 a high school student.
